for soprano, flute and piano
Story behind the piece:
Song based on a poem by Victor Hugo
Mes vers fuiraient, doux et frêles,
Vers votre jardin si beau,
Si mes vers avaient des ailes,
Des ailes comme l'oiseau.
Ils voleraient, étincelles,
Vers votre foyer qui rit,
Si mes vers avaient des ailes,
Des ailes comme l'esprit.
Près de vous, purs et fidèles,
Ils accourraient, nuit et jour,
Si mes vers avaient des ailes,
Des ailes comme l'amour!
. . . as transposed by my father,
Dr S N Solomons
into an English equivalent:
My gentle words would flee to your so lovely garden;
if they could only fly on fragile wings.
They would rise
sparkling towards your dwelling kind,
could they but take to wing on flights of mind.
Close to you, pure and true,
straight from the sky above my words would fly
on wings of love!
This particular peformance was recorded late one night after a hard day's singing at the Early Music course in Ambleside.
Kudos and many thanks to all concerned:
Ellie, Deborah Catterall and Jacqui
