Story behind the piece:
The various movements of this piece come fom various stages in my life.
Skallywag's kickwalk is fairly recent and is a sort of reminiscence of Debussy's "Golliwog's cakewalk" idea, but not using the same themes, just the feel.
The Sad song is based on a Yiddish folksong "ale vasserlech", which you can hear me sing here.
The modal 3rd movement was written for the Manchester recorder player John Turner (hence the punning title in which I "turn" the corner towards the octatonic mode).
The "Fond memories" of the second movement are the earliest tunes and go back as far as the mid 1970s, when Shostakovitch died. It was initially intended as a homage to that great composer and has a few hints of his style hidden within.
